Text . BIOENERGY
1. Bioenergy is the general term, for energy derived fr om materials such
as wood, straw or animal wastes, which were living matter relatively recently
– in contrast to the fossil fuels. Such materials can be burned directly to
produce heat or power, but can also be converted into biofuels. Charcoal and
biodiesel, for example, are biofuels made from wood and plant seeds
respectively.
2. All the earth's living matter, its biomass, exists in the thin surface
layer called the biosphere. It represents only a tiny fraction of the total mass
of the earth, but in human terms it is an enormous energy store. More
significantly, it is a store which is continually replenished by the flow of
energy from the sun, through the process of photosynthesis.
3. It is important to appreciate the role of the biomass in maintaining the
earth's atmosphere. If a cosmic hurricane swept away all the plant life on
earth, the resulting loss of mass would be no more than one part in a billion.
Yet the physical consequences of this extremely small change would be
enormous. There would no longer be a supply of oxygen to the atmosphere,
and it is the the particular mixture of nitrogen, oxygen and trace gases such as
CO2 which in turn maintains the surface conditions on the earth. It is
essential to bear in mind the important fact that the biomass and the
atmosphere are not two separate features of the surface layers of the earth:
their interdependence is so strong that it is essential to treat them as one
single system.
4. In nature, the energy stored in the carbohydrates in plants is dissipated
through a series of conversions involving chemical and physical processes in
the plant, the soil, the atmosphere and other living matter, until it is
eventually radiated away from the earth as low-temperature heat1. Some will
be lost within a year, but biomass can accumulate over decades in the wood
of trees. A small fraction may accumulate over centuries as peat, and a tiny
proportion has become fossil fuel over periods measured in millions of years.
5. The significance of these processes is that if we can 'capture' some of
the biomass at the stage wh ere it is acting as a store of chemical energy, we

level of production, the combustion of biofuels should generate no more heat
and create no more carbon dioxide. So it seems that here we have a truly
sustainable energy source, with no harmful global environmental effects at
all.
6. Material such as firewood and other plant or animal residues can
simply be burned to produce heat, and in many developing countries this
traditional biomass continues to account for a large part of energy
consumption. In recent decades, however, terms such as 'new' biomass have
come into use to characterize materials that are processed on a large scale.
The input to these processes are often organic wastes. The output may be
useful heat, or any of a wide range of solid, liquid or gaseous biofuels.
