The Commonwealth of Australia
1. Australia is almost as large as the continental United States. It is situated., in the south-eastern part of Asia. It is washed by the Indian Ocean in the West and South and by the Pacific Ocean in the East. Its nearest neighbours are Indonesia, Papua New Guinea in the north, Solomons, Fiji, and New Zealand in the east. Australia is an island continent. The western . lateau rises to 2,000 feet, with arid areas in the Great Sandy and Great Victoria deserts. The north-western part of Western Australia and northern territories are arid & hot. The north¬eastern part has heavy rainfall. The Murray River rises in New South Wales and flows 1,600 miles to the Indian Ocean. The capi¬tal of Australia is Canberra. The main cities are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth.
2. Australia has a federal state system. The head of the state is the king or queen of Great Britain, represented by the Govemor-Ceneral with the Prime Minister in office. There are auch local divisions: 6 states, 2 territories.
3.Such industries are developed as: iron, steel, textiles, chemical, aircraft, shipbuilding, machinery. They grow such сhief crops as wheat (a leading export), barley, oats, corn, vegetables.

6.Captain James Cook explored the eastern coast of Australia in 1770, when the continent was inhabited by a variety of dif¬ferent tribes. The first settlers, beginning in 1788, were mostly soldiers and government officials. By 1830 Britain had claimed the entire continent. The commonwealth was proclaimed on the first of January, 1901. The Northern Territory was granted , limited self-rule on the first of July in. 1978.
7.Australia's racially discriminatory immigration policies were abandoned in 1973, after 3 million Europeans (half British) had entered sincesince. The 50,000 aborigines and 150,000 part- aborigines are mostly detribalized, but there are several pre¬serves in the Northern Territory. They remain economically disadvantaged.
