CRIMES
It's fairly obvious that we often keep our belongings in our house. It's, however, evident we don't want any burglars to have their hands on our belongings.
What are usual safety measures when you are away on holiday? You doors and windows should be locked securely. Valuables and jewellery should be invested in a safe. Nothing precious should just be around.
To be extra careful you may use some additional safety measures which may help scare off a burglar. Leaving on a light or radio, may be helpful, although that alone is not the best point.
What are the best ways to secure your home? Asking a trustworthy neighbour to watch your house when you're away, can be helpful, hi addition to defensive locks and safes, burglar bars can slow down a burglar, although burglar bars do have some aesthetic and safety disadvantages. If you want to protect your belongings and prevent burglars from helping themselves to anything yours, if you don't trust neighbourhood watch scheme the best way to secure your house is to find a reputable security firm to install a burglar alarm. By using a combination of measures, and remembering to set the alarm whenever you leave your house, you'll feel most comfortable that your house is secure.
Home burglary isn't the only theft which may put us at risk. Nowadays mobile phone thefts are becoming increasingly common. Your phone will be more secure if you are careful in public to constantly be aware of its location. Obviously, you shouldn't lend it to strangers, or use it unnecessarily in unsafe locations.
Such crimes as burglary, robbery, mugging, theft, pick pocketing are committed rather often. Even awareness of possible sentencing, imprisonment or other punishments doesn't always deter criminals from committing crimes. In the event of any crime you should contact the police and make a report of the crime. If your phone is out of order or you were robbed in the street run up to any policeman and even if he isn't on duty at the moment, he will or he must help you.
And now some more advice what to do if you are robbed:
• if your money was stolen, make an insurance claim;
• if your passport was stolen, contact the police as quickly as possible to cancel the cheques;
• if your tickets were stolen make a report of the crime to the travel agency or Embassy (if abroad).
Some more ways of securing your belongings: get your belongings insured; fit stronger locks; buy a big dog; hire a security man or even a bodyguard.
