Fire Department Personnel
1. Fire fighting requires skill in preventing, combating, and extinguishing fires; answering emergency calls; and operating and maintaining fire department equipment and apparatus. The work involves extensive training in fire fighting, rescue activities, hazardous materials, and emergency medical care. Although fire fighting and rescue work are the most demanding tasks, a significant portion of time is spent on inspections, training, and station duties.
2. To function effectively, a firefighter must have certain knowledge and skills including:
· Know department organization, operation, and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
· Know the district or city street system.
· Respond to fire alarms with the company, operate fire fighting equipment, lay and connect hose, maneuver nozzles and direct fire streams, raise and climb ladders, and use extinguishers and all fire fighting hand tools.
· Remove people from danger and administer first aid.
3. The training that new firefighters receive is one of the most important aspects of their job. A firefighter’s training never ends. New materials and technology present challenges that never before existed.
4. A fire department is composed of individuals with different backgrounds and different ideas about life. The success of a fire department depends on the willingness of its members to put aside their differences and work for the benefit of the department.

Combustion
Fire and combustion are terms that are often used interchangeably.
Technically, however, fire is a form of combustion. Fire is a rapid, self- sustaining oxidization process accompanied by the evolution of heat and light of varying intensities.
For many years, the fire triangle (oxygen, fuel, and heat) was used to teach the components of fire. While this simple example is useful, it is not technically correct. For combustion to occur, four components are necessary:
· Oxygen (oxidizing agent)
· Fuel
· Heat
· Self-sustained chemical reaction.
This concept is extremely important to students of fire suppression, prevention and investigation. Remove any one of the four components and combustion will not occur.
